The days are indeed passing by quickly and here we are almost at the end of the
first month of the New Year and with it the daily affairs of life as we seek to
serve and glory our risen Savior and faithful Lord! I returned to California
the week after our After Christmas Outreach events to have a follow-up
examination with an eye specialist to begin treatment for the beginning stages
of glaucoma. While there I was able to share my testimony with the guys at the
Men’s Breakfast at Calvary Chapel Saving Grace. Recalling the wonderful works
of God in my life in drawing me to Him is always a huge boost of encouragement
knowing that the good work that He has started He will be faithful and will
complete. I was energized, rested and ready for the task ahead of following Him
where ever He leads, whenever He calls, to whomever He directs me to. That was
tested immediately as I sought to fly back to Belize and missing 8 back to back
flights with my stand-by travel status which through off my schedule by a day
and had to readjust others schedules as well. I soon found out the reason as I
met a young man who was sitting reading his Bible as he was coming back to the
Lord after a season of backsliding. After encouraging him in the Word and
praying for him we enjoyed sweet fellowship and I got on the last flight for
the day; 10 hours in the airport was worth it to see this young man restored in
fellowship with Jesus and my resolved confirmed.

Ron Huinik from Galcom International, Canada was waiting for me in Belize and my
delay enabled him one more day to get another Christian Radio up and running; it
was off to the island to have the new guide-wires installed at Lighthouse
Christian Radio. Ron was with the crew from Galcom who installed our tower and
guide wires 4 years ago. It was quite a shock to see how these strong cables
had rusted to the condition they were in and I was reminded of the similarity of
rust and sin; if left un-dealt with it will destroy even the strongest. We are
so grateful for Ron who used his vacation time from his regular job in Canada
to journey down to help 3 Christian Radio stations in Belize. Thank you Lord
for Galcom and the many who made that possible!

Lighthouse Christian Radio, will be leaving to return to his home country of
Nicaragua in a few days. I met Edler over 5 years ago shortly after he became a
Christian and moved to Belize where he worked as a construction worker. He
quickly became a friend in spite of the language barrier and developed a
father/son relationship as he adopted me as his Belizean father. He expressed a
desire to know God’s Word so we were able to send him to the Bible College at
the Calvary Chapel San Salvador for a year and then returned to Belize to serve
in the ministry. Due to family’s health issues Edler decided to return to
Nicaragua. He will be greatly missed as he has been a great help to me in so
many area which lighten my load and enabled me to be away from the radio station
for periods of time. He also taught a weekly Spanish Bible study and has been
discipling Juan Carlos, our student intern who lived with him in the staff
apartment. Please pray for Edler as he continues to pursue the Lord and follow
His lead for the next season of his life!

We are blessed to be a part of the lives of many who has served at the Lighthouse
and seeing how the Lord has used their time here to prepare them for their
future ministry and life. One such person is Dennis Requena who I met in 1999
and soon after he asked if I would be his father since he lost his father at a
very early age. He worked alongside of me from the inception of the radio
station in 2003 and served for 5 years. He married Lorena and moved to the
mainland where he a teacher at Roaring Creek Nazarene Primary School and now he
is the proud father of Jonathon Alexander who was born on January 8.

Elmer Montero, our full time paid Belizean staff, expressed to me recently how much it
has helped him being at Lighthouse. He was working as a landscaper during the
day and attending school in the evening. He came on staff and worked for a few
hours between his day job and night school which was a very crazy schedule for him. We took a step of faith and offered him full time work with us as we needed someone with his computer skills and could do the daily Newscast in English. He had no previous experience but jumped in and learned and is now training others. Elmer is now attending the Jr. College and will receive his Associate of Arts degree in December of this year in Business Administration and hope to start his own business. We’re grateful to the Lord to be able to raise up and assist those that He directs to serve alongside of us.

On a personal note:

Jesus said that the fields are ripe for the harvest and the laborers are few. I am
ever so mindful of that reality over the years and especially seeing the
growing needs in the community and if I was to be very bold and honest, I’d say
that it is overwhelming and discouraging. We need help and cannot continue like
this with so much to do and not enough people and resources to get it done
effectively and efficiently. So would you please pray that the Lord of the
Harvest to send out laborers into the harvest field in San Pedro Town and in
the meantime, give me wisdom on what to do and not do. Also, please pray about
financially supporting me as my monthly support has dropped considerable over
the past 6 months. I don’t like to talk about it or mention it but feel the
necessity to let you know. I will be more than glad to share with you
personally how you can come alongside of the many that benefit from the monthly
support that I receive; 3 High School students, student intern allowance, etc.

As the celebration of Christmas Day are a few days behind us with all of the memories of special times with family and friends filled with good food and traditions. Most of us have read or heard the Christmas story or perhaps seem it enacted in children plays and performances. Something has left an impression upon your heart or mind this Christmas that will be treasured for some time or forever. For me, the words of Mary have stirred deeply in me and I cannot stop thinking about her absolute surrender to the will and word of God, ‘let it be to me according to your word’. She had no idea of what that surrender and commit would mean to her future and the future of the world. As 2012 is quickly approaching, none of us know what it holds but as we surrender to His will and purposes for our lives we will have an effect not just on our lives but on others in the future!

I attended Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship Christmas Banquet and spending that time

Pastor Rudy, son, Clive, Ronald and Isaac after Christmas Banquet

with the Body was very special and that was truly when it began to feel like Christmas. I was also privileged by sharing the Word on Christmas morning at Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship. As I gazed out on the folks who attended, I began to thank the Lord and rejoiced in the work He has done in the lives of those I had gotten to know over the past 10 years. The depth of fellowship and friendships developed over those years with this amazing group of seekers of God’s grace and being able to see the abounding fruits leaves me chocked up and looking up to God for the honor of being a part of it. One of my most favorite part of the of the Sunday morning service at Amazing Grace is when the children are dismissed for their classes and to see the eager faces as file out ever so quickly from the sanctuary leaving over half of the seats

Amazing Grace kids after Christmas Day Service playing outside of church

empty. Well, this past Sunday as I was leaving church and heading to the parking lot, many of the kids were at the entrance of the church playing with their gifts and crafts. I began to count them; about 18, as well as asking them their ages and most of them were under 8 years old. That is when it hit me that the fellowship was formed before anyone of them was born. They are truly the fruits of the ministry. Many of them have such a love for the Word and their grasp of the Scriptures is astounding. Pastor Rudy Plett commented recently that his daughter has far more knowledge of the Scriptures now than he had when he was her age. And it is a thrill to see some of the youth involved in the youth group and worship team. What a wonderful work God has done and continues to do at Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship; to Him be the glory!

Christmas in Belize (Belize Navidad)

After speaking at Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship on Christmas morning, I packed my bags once again and heading for San Pedro Town with several stops in Belmopan. The first was for Christmas lunch with a precious family and then it was off to pick up Florencio, my Mayan friend who was going to the island with me to help with the upcoming outreach. It was off to the International Airport to meet some of the Believers World Outreach team who arrived on Christmas day and traveled over to the island on December 27. It was then over to San Pedro by flight from the Municipal Airport and by the grace of God got on the last flight. Christmas dinner was provided by a friend who packed it for us, Edler and Florencio, to eat together at the radio station. Not the typical Christmas Day but a blessed one celebrating the King’s birth by serving Him!

The Believers World Mission returns to Belize with a team of 22 to minister God’s love with the children of San Pedro Town. This year’s team consisted of 2 families; a family of 7 with 5 kids ranging in ages 2-10 and the other family of 5 with 3 kids ages 2, 4, and 5. With school out for the Christmas most of the kids on the island have nothing to do and recalling the results of last year where many lives were touch and several came to know the Lord. So when Believers World Outreach asked to return I couldn’t refuse knowing that it was going to be a busy transitional time for us. The mornings are filled with a football (soccer) tournament and the afternoons,

Cameron, 10 year old team member, led his new friend to Jesus after VBS in the Park

a VBS in the Park with over 80 kids attending. It’s always a marvel to me how the Lord works and how He is using the teams to touch lives. Hunter, a 10 year old son of one of the team members, led a 5 year old boy to the Lord after the VBS and asked if we can have a baptism service for him over the weekend. It is so powerful to see kids ministering to kids and the impact the they are making on the Belizean kids, amazing!

Looking Back on 2011

As I look back on the past year of ministry in Belize and beyond, the faithfulness of God would summarize it! It has been a very challenging year in many areas both personally and in ministry with times of frustration, heartbreaks and sleepless nights. But the joys of watching God touch and change lives always overshadows the hard times! Countless names and faces flashes through my mind as I write this and with each one I cannot help but think of the impact that each one of you have had in these lives through your prayers and financial support throughout the year. Thank you!!

Looking Ahead in 2012

I have many dreams and vision of things that I’d like to see happen in my life and ministry in Belize but I’m resolving to simply trust in the Lord, wait and see what He will do and realize that I’m to continue abiding. I know there will be changes at the Lighthouse as Edler will be leaving at the end of January to go back home to Nicaragua. At this time we have no replacement for him. He will be hard guy to replace and have done a tremendous job of assisting me over the past year. He sees the necessity to go back home for a period of time to be with family as several of them are ill and then continue to seek the Lord for the next step in his life. Please pray for him and his family in this time!

Galcom International has sent us another 1,000 solar powered, fixed tuned radio and just in time because we recently ran out and are receiving many request for them. We are also excited about Ron Huinink from Galcom coming to San Pedro Town to replace our rusting guide-wires for the tower. We really don’t know fully the impact those radios are having but from a few of the stories we hear, we rejoice in the Lord for using them and many other tools in getting the gospel out. Thank you very much Galcom for your partnership in the gospel!

Well, I close off this Update by asking God’s richest blessings upon you this upcoming New Year. May He ever increase in you and through you as He takes you to higher heights and deeper depths in His love and grace. Also, remember to forget what lies behind and press toward all that He has in store for you in 2012. I greatly appreciate you very much for all of you for your sacrificial giving during this time of financial hardships and looking forward to continue in His service alongside of you as long as God permits. Please contact me with comments and encouragements as they go a very long way!

I Thessalonians 5:18

I arrived in Southern California and quickly began securing appointments for my annual medical appointments and had the opportunity to have Thanksgiving Day in the US, something I hadn’t had in a long time; turkey dinner with special friends. While sitting on the porch at my host home and glanced at the American flag they have flying, I became very aware of one of the greatest blessing of all time that I’ve been given and that was to be granted the honor of being brought to America at an early age and all of the benefits that are mine as an American citizen. I thank God for this great nation and how He used it to bring me to the knowledge of my Savior and Lord that I now get to serve in full time ministry back in my birth country of Belize. I am truly a blessed and thankful man and extremely grateful and indebted to His grace and mercy!

Belize Action: Family Focus Forum I attending the Family Focus Forum held in Belmopan, the nation’s capital, where a well organized and very informative forum took place that addressed the upcoming lawsuit by a homosexual advocacy group again the Government of Belize. Several professions spoke on the affect of homosexuality on society from a medical, scientific, legal, family and religious. It is a blessing to see the Churches using this opportunity to share Christ love, and uniting together for righteousness in our nation. All eyes are upon this upcoming Supreme Court case as it will set precedence for all of the other Central American countries. The court case was set for December 5 but I just read today that it might be postponed for a later date. Please keep that in your prayers and I’ll keep you informed!

As always, the Calvary Chapel Central America Pastors and leaders conference was a great time of fellowship, teaching and encouragement for all who attended from almost all of the Central American countries. Hosted by CC San Salvador with several special speakers; one of my favorite Don McClure, shared on the topic of being Passionate for the things of the Lord. Five of the six Calvary Chapels in Belize sent representative and it was a blessing to spend time with them and hear how God was working in the various fellowships. What thrilled me the most about this is that each is an answer to my prayers of several years since returning to Belize 17 years ago. It was also good to hear of the work of God in the various churches in Central America as the Word of God is being taught chapter by chapter and verse by verse. Pastor Rudy from Amazing Grace was able to take his wife Rachel who really enjoyed the teachings they had for the pastor’s wives this year. Despite the language barrier, I was greatly blessed by the conference and thank the Lord greatly for all that went into putting on such a conference each year to encourage and strengthen us in the Lord. Thank you Jesus!

On Sunday, November 20 San Pedro residents witness history in the making as 8 churches, their pastors and congregation along with Lighthouse Christian Radio took to the street with floats, banners, balloons, celebrating the Bible and proclaiming God’s love for the people of San Pedro Town. In spite of the light rain, which produced a beautiful rainbow above the parade, an estimated one thousand people marched down one of the main streets with several well decorated floats and placards with Scripture verses on them in Spanish. The parade ended at the Old Football Field where several churches provided a short program; skits, flag presentation of the Central America countries and praise and worship. The other pastors and I never thought of such an outcome while praying and planning this event several months ago and were greatly encouraged by the stand that many believers made before their neighbors, families and friends who lined the streets to observe this historical event.

Singing songs of praise through the streets of San Pedro Town!

Many Bibles, Christian literature and gospel tracts where passed out as jubilant songs of praise from Lighthouse Christian Radio were amplified and several churches had live worship bands on floats in the parade along with singing congregants marching through the streets. Both of the local newspaper ran stories about the parade and commented about the impressive turnout and the beauty of the floats. The Area Representative and Minister of Tourism gave opening remarks and expressed his thanks to the churches for providing the community with such a strong foundation for upcoming generations. I really believe that God touched him as the pastors

I thank the Lord for the pastors who saw the necessity of putting aside differences and uniting as a strong force for righteousness in our town and I look forward to more events like this to shine our light before men that they may see our good works glorify our Father in Heaven!

Changes again at the Lighthouse:

Well it seems as if each year we go through major changes and you would think that I’d be use to it by now but I’m still being thankful. Edler Blas informed me that he will be going back to Nicaragua at the earlier part of next year to be with his family who are having health problems. Edler has been a great help over the past year after returning from Bible School in San Salvador and told me that he has learned more in this past year than ever before about practical ministry. He will be greatly missed and we trust that God will continue to work in and with him as He leads him in the next phase of growth and development. Please pray for Edler as well as for someone to fill his most important role in the ministry at Lighthouse!

Giving thanks with a grateful heart:

My phone rang shortly after 1 pm on Friday afternoon with the hard news that Wendell Reimer was shot and killed outside his hardware store in Belize City. This was a regular occurrence that appeared in our daily news* but this was very close to home because I knew Wendell. I met him several years ago and got to know him as he would give me rides to the City on my way to the island. We would have interesting conversation as he was seeking to understand the Bible in light of his strict Mennonite upbringing. I had the honor of officiating the wedding of Clara and Wendell on January 9, 2010. Minutes after his death I spoke to his wife on the phone, still in shock and unbelief as she rehearsed the events that led up to her husband’s death. His shop was being burglarized when he walked and trying to get away from the robbers when they shot him outside while his wife watched from a distance. I felt so helpless being unable to be there to comfort her in this moment of trauma and tragedy especially after finding out that she was in her final weeks of pregnancy.

Many viewing Wendell's body at close of funeral service.

I was asked to speak at his funeral which was held three days later in the big Mennonite Church in Spanish Lookout. In his life Wendell untied the Mennonite and the Mayan cultures in his marriage and in this death he leaves united many church cultures as several who shared in the funeral service was not from the Mennonite church. This was a first for me to speak from the pulpit of this church and I might be one of the first non-Mennonite to ever speak at that church. Please pray for Clara’s delivery of her child which is due any day now also for comfort during this time of lost and grieving!

Lives touching lives:

Dennis, a young man that I’ve befriended and shared the Lord with for some time now and have spoken of him in past Updates as the ’17 year old father’. He had become more and more closed off to hearing the gospel as his life of pleasure seeking continued and slowly he was no longer coming over to see me and when he did, he would avoid all the topics of life, death, sin and its consequences. One of our last conversations I told him that I would be praying for him specifically that ‘whatever it takes’ for him to come to know the Person of Jesus Christ who loves him so very much that He died on a Cross for him. Long story short, I had a dream about him going away and that I would never see him again which would bring tears to my eyes whenever I’d think about this dream as it seemed so real. I found out later that he moved back to Guatemala and tired relentlessly to locate him. A few weeks ago I received word from his father that he was in prison in Guatemala and my mind flashed back on my prayers for him, ‘whatever it takes’! We continued to pray for him and a few days ago I was told that he was released after being in prison for a month. I made contact with him by phone and he told me that while in prison he had a lot of time to think over the many things that I had shared with him and that he gave his life to the Lord. God had worked in drastic ways to get his attention and it made me laugh when he told me that upon going to jail he was very upset at me when he recalled that I told him I’d pray ‘whatever it takes’. Overjoyed to tears I encouraged him to continue in the Lord and was able to make contact with several Calvary Chapel pastors in Guatemala who has made contact with him already. Please pray for Dennis in this time of establishing his foundation in Christ; an environment to grow and mature in his faith!

Romeo, I couldn’t believe my ears when he told me his name and couldn’t help but chuckle inside, attended to me as I was in a store a few weeks back in Belmopan. Little did I know that brief encounter would develop into a friendship for the gospel as we talked over lunch and he opened up and began to share his life story with me. I told him that it was not a coincidence meeting him but a ‘divine appointment’ as God wanted him to know how much he was loved. We’ve kept in touch by texting, phone calls and a couple more visits when I was in his area and during our last visit I showed him the text he sent me which stated that it wasn’t going to be long before he would make a commitment to the Lord. It had been awhile now and I stressed the urgency as with Wendell who had no idea of his time to enter eternity. He told me that he was thinking the very same thing and that now was the time. He prayed and made a commitment to Christ while sitting in my pickup and I could truly see a change in his face as he stepped out of the darkness into the Light. Please pray for Romeo that he begins to lay a good foundation in Christ!

Juan Carlos has served as a student intern at Lighthouse Christian Radio about a year ago for several months. Just recently we’ve taken him in as our DIP, Disciple in Process, after he shared his heart and some of the struggles that he had that cause him to fail and having to repeat the year. In the month he has been here his grade point average climbed to 86.77 and there is a noticeable change in his attitude and life. His day starts off with a devotional time with Edler and Elmer before going to school and upon returning in the last afternoon, he has his homework/study time followed by his service time of various tasks around the Lighthouse. He is learning to play the guitar and doing very well; leading the praise and worship time at the Tuesday Night Spanish Bible study with Edler the guys and recently asked to join the music team at his church. He visits his family often and noticed that his relationship with them has improved greatly as well as his walk with the Lord. Juan is in need of paying off his school fees for this year and his basic needs since being with us; food, school supplies, and daily necessities. Can you assist with this and be a part of the process of his discipleship? Please contact me with whatever amount you can assist him with on a monthly basis or a onetime gift, thanks much!

I met him a month ago and heard his story and he shared with me his desire to go back to school. it’s been 4 years since he was in school but feared that he wouldn’t be able to do it since it’s been so long. We made some inquiries and enrolled him in night classes as he is working all day and then go to classes from 6 – 10 pm. We were able to purchase some of his books, school registration and one month’s school fee with funds left by Calvary Chapel West Grove. Will you consider assisting in Abner’s dream to finish his high school education? His school fees are $63.US a month!

Florencio, a Mayan young man that I mentioned in previous Updates, has reconnected with me recently. He shared the reason why he had requested I not keep in touch with him was because of a horrible fight that he had with his drunken father one night and how he retreated into himself because of the emotional blow he had received from him. He shared how he was hurt that he wanted to give up on school and felt so worthless as that is what he was being told by his father. My heart broke when he shared these and other things with me. Florencio is a very smart young man that maintains a very high grade point average and ranks 1st or 2nd in his class. It pains me to see how much he was damaged by his father’s words and I found myself repeating over and over to him how valuable he is to His Heavenly Father who loves him very much. Please pray for this young man that He would begin to grasp the heart of God toward him!

As I write this it suddenly hits me that most if not all of the lives that I’ve had the opportunity to minister to are all, either fatherless or whose fathers are not fulfilling their God given role in the lives of their sons. Many of them have placed me in that role in their lives and truly I see that as one of my primary ministry in Belize as I can so relate growing up without a father myself and able to encourage them of the reality of God as their Eternal and Heavenly Father. There are so many others that I’d like to share their story with you on how your life is touching their lives here in Belize as you co-labor alongside of me in the gospel. You are truly making a difference and I cannot thank you enough for your continual support through your prayers, encouragement, sacrificial giving, and doing what you do there that enables me to do what I do here!

After a marvelous time visiting friends and taking a well needed break, it was time to head back to Belize by way of Dallas, Texas. As usual, my life is full of ‘divine appointments’ and ‘God-incidence.’ The first, arriving very early at the airport to see my name listed at 35 on the stand-by list for the flight. Knowing I had to get back to Belize for a Media meeting the following day, I prayed and was given the grace to not worry about it and to trust the Lord for the outcome. I watched my number on the board slowly decreasing and my name called just as the door of the plane was about to close. Secondly, my connecting flight was to depart 40 minutes after I landed so running to the gate and making it just in time. And finally, as I took my seat and got situated to my surprise the Prime Minister of Belize boarded the plane and sat right behind me across the aisle. I prayed immediately and continued throughout the entire flight about what I was to do with this seemingly door of opportunity and finally resolved that I was to pray for him because he was busy reading the entire time. Upon leaving the plane when we reached Belize I introduced myself to him briefly.

Media Fellowship meeting:

Isaac showing the members of the BCMF the studio of Horizon Radio!

I scheduled my return in order to attend the Belize Christian Media Fellowship meeting which was hosted by Horizon Radio in Spanish Lookout the day after my arrival. Once again, it was a great time of true Christian fellowship starting with a time of worship and a time of encouragement from the Word, followed by discussion on several issues that faced us as a nation and our role as Christian communicators seeking to serve our Lord and the people He has entrusted to us. We shared a meal together and enjoyed getting to know each other better followed by a tour of studio of Horizon Radio. One of the many thrills for me was to see genuine and practical encouragement taking place through the sharing of resources, contacts and information. This is truly what fellowship is all about and an answer to prayers for us all!

Clive and Louis worshipping and sharing the Word before meeting begins.

Louis Wade, the owner of Plus TV and president of the Belize Christian Media Fellowship shared with us about a call he had received from the Prime Minister asking for prayers and I couldn’t help but think that could have been one of the results of me being impressed to pray for the Prime Minister when I was on the flight with him the day prior. Louis was also asked to represent Belize in a recent International Media Conference in Taiwan and we closed our time together by praying for him and for the various needs of all of the ministries represented at the meeting and others we knew in need. Please continue to pray that we as Christian media in Belize can truly make a difference as we communicate grace and truth to the people of our nation and we work together in the fellowship of the gospel!

Family visit and a wedding:

Clive officiating Nicole & John's wedding on the beach in Ambergris Caye!

My oldest and youngest sisters arrived in Belize with my niece Nicole for her wedding to John in San Pedro Town four days after my arrival! This was the first visit back to Belize for Angela, my youngest sister since she left some 40 plus years ago. I could only imagined all that went through her mind as we briefly toured her birth place and the last place she last lived before migrating to the US. I had the privilege of officiating Nicole and John’s wedding at the beautiful Victoria House Resort right on the banks of the Caribbean Sea. Nicole is my oldest niece and I have treasured memories of her growing up and very glad that she chose Ambergris Caye for her wedding destination after her first visit several years ago. Please pray for their new life together!

Belize Independence Day Celebration:

Belize celebrates 30 years as a nation on September 21 and days before, the Honorable George Price who was the first Prime Minister and founder of the nation died. He was greatly loved by all and was a good example of a leader and was known as the father of the Nation. We participated in this year’s Independence Day Parade in San Pedro town alongside of the Shalom Church, a Spanish Church, as their worship band and congregation sang praise songs along the parade trail. We borrowed a golf cart and placed our Lighthouse banner on the back of it along with wearing our new Lighthouse t-shirt. While singing and parading several miles through the streets of San Pedro Town and beach front with thousands of on-lookers, we were able to pass out hundreds of gospel tracts which were gladly received. I had never experienced people asking me for

tracts before especially the Million Dollar Question tracts which looks like a large million dollar bill with a presentation of the gospel on the back. I was blessed by the responses of the onlooker as they saw Christians dancing and singing joyfully compared to the many drunken participants that preceded us. The witness and effectiveness of the parade by the church led me to meeting with several of the pastors and discussing a New Year’s Eve Christian Parade. Please pray for this opportunity to reach out to the residence of San Pedro Town!

Lighthouse Christian Radio:

We recently received a shipment of our beautiful and colorful Lighthouse t-shirts to help us ‘shine the Light in darkness’ and get the word out about the radio station as well as raising funds for the ministry. Edler Blas did a great job in overseeing the ministry in my absence and Elmer in daily operations and news preparation. Since the last update, Geovanni the young man who we were hoping would join us at the Lighthouse to be discipled as he became a believer this past July, had some conflict at home and moved out. We’ve sought to locate him unsuccessfully so please pray for him that God would continue His work of grace in his life in the midst of his difficulties. As it turns out, Juan Carlos came to me sharing his need for a place to stay so he can continues his schooling without distractions at his home which contributed to him failing the year and having to repeating it. Juan Carlos has been with us now for over a week and is enjoying being our first DIP; Disciple Intern Program or Disciple in Progress. It is a blessing to have him here with us as he is very eager to grow in the Lord and appreciates very much this opportunity. Edler meets with Juan Carlos and Elmer daily for morning devotions before work and school. Please pray for Juan Carlos and for financial support for his school fee and daily provisions!

Things of interest and Upcoming Events:

Tabi Evans from Bath, England arrived in Belize on September 11 and began serving in Marla’s House of Hope, a home for sexual abuse children, establishing a preschool program for that age group in the Home. She’s doing well adjusting!

Reunion at the Lighthouse; Dennis Requena and Johnny Wall came to island for my niece’s wedding. Dennis played music and Johnny videoed the wedding. It was fun to have them both here again. Dennis is teaching full time at Roaring Creek Nazarene Primary School and soon to be a father while Johnny is operations manager at Horizon Radio, Spanish Lookout!

September 27, 1994 I returned to Belize not having any idea what God had in mind and I’ve watched much unfolded since that first trip back 17 years ago!

Making plans for the 2nd Annual Lighthouse Radio After Christmas Football Tournament and New Year’s Eve Parade with Believer’s World Outreach. If interested in being a part of this, contact them!

We are running very low on our Gospel Tracts since the parade and would appreciate very much both English and Spanish tracts for daily use and upcoming Christian Parade and outreaches!

Prayer Requests and Praise Reports:

Praising God for His continual grace and faithfulness to me and directing me back to Belize 17 years ago!

Pray for the ability to get caught up on many things since being back from vacation and application of things learned while away.

Praising God for Edler and Elmer as they work daily to keep Lighthouse Christian Radio operating efficiently!

Pray for Geovanni’s walk with the Lord; that we’d find him to help him. For Juan Carlos as he’s being discipled at Lighthouse for financial provision!

Thankful to The Baker who gives us bread for needy families in town daily!

Please pray for the upcoming lawsuit court case against the government of Belize by a homosexual advocacy group on December 5, 2011.

Please pray for an uneventful completion of this Hurricane Season; season ends November 2011.

Thank you for your partnership in the gospel with me in Belize and Beyond; your consistency in encouragement, prayers and financial giving which enables me to do what I in Belize!

“And he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways….he did not turn aside to the right hand or the left.” 2 Kings 22:2

During my time away from Belize, I’ve been reflecting on various aspects of my life and ministry while reading the Books of Kings. One of the many things that caught my eyes and gripped my heart is the effect that a person in leadership can have on the direction of an entire nation, city or ministry and the lasting results on those presently and those to come. Decisions, choices and examples that I make will affect those in my spheres of influence and all of it will be determined by my walk with the Lord and not turning from the right or the left in my commitment to Him. My prayer is that I am found dwelling in His Presence and in so doing will leave behind a sweet fragrance for Christ in the lives along my brief pilgrimage in his life. And truly touch lives that in turn will touch other for Jesus Christ!

Lives touching lives: Netherlands

Ron & Lia Zwann with Clive on recent trip to Netherlands.

With all of the preparations in place for my departure from Belize: radio station operation/staff, schedules, bills, and plans in place for the next few weeks. Along with wrapping up the past month of teams/interns, their accounting, final plans for last team/interns departure, unpacking and packing; I was finally boarding a plane for Dallas, Texas where I slept for almost an entire day. My host was wondering what was wrong when I emerged from the bedroom in the afternoon! It was them off to Europe for a needed time of rest and refreshment, thanks to frequent flier miles and cheap flights on Easy Jets. Little did I realize that this was to be an anniversary of sorts; it was 11 years ago that I attended the Billy Graham’s Amsterdam 2000 Conference where God did a significant work in my heart which led me to full time mission work in Belize as well as meeting a person who has since become one of my dearest and closest brother in Christ, Ron Zwaan. Ron & Lia blessed me with an amazing time of rest, refreshment, great food and fellowship mixed with many laughter and reflections of the great things that God has done in our lives over the past eleven years. So many of the promises the Lord made to me during that conference has been fulfilled and it was exciting to be back at that very place to recall what He had done and to be encouraged once again by new things and promises He has now placed in my heart for the next season of my life and ministry. I also spent time with a Dutch family that I met in Belize and performed their son’s wedding several years ago, small world indeed! I’m so grateful to the Lord for priceless, precious and special people He has touched my life with which enables me to do the same to others!

Clive being interview at Widcombe Baptist Church in Bath, England about the work in Belize!

Lives touching lives: Bath, England

It was then off to Bath, England where I spent several days with friends there and again, I marveled at the precious people that I had gotten to know over the years. It’s all a part of His live touching our lives and bonding us so deeply in His love and grace. An amazingly long and precious story as I look back on it all with such awe and gratitude to the Lord for blessings me with such precious friendships and fellowship. Long story short; from a meeting with Adrian Weekes through a mutual British friend in 1994 in Preston, led to meeting five British young men, 4 from the City of Bath and developed very special relationships. That was the start of hosting several of them years later on their ‘gap year’ or subsequent visits to California and Belize over the past 11 years. More recent, and a young lady, the sister of 2 of the guys, will be heading to Belize in a few weeks. Each is a remarkable story of God touching lives and enabling us to touch others lives.

Andy Young & Hugh Evans, guys Clive met many years ago in Bath and met up with them on his recent trip!

The value of these friendships are priceless to me and being welcomed into their hearts and home in times like this leaves me speechless and humbled. I’m received such godly examples, rich encouragement, practical counsel, and great hospitality which made the five day spent there a tremendous blessing. A short time but was able to connect with several of the guys, one took the train from Oxford to have lunch with me and then travelled back after. God has truly blessed me with a very large family indeed and provided me with special times of rest and refreshment with special people of which I give Him great praise and thanksgiving for each one!

Lives touching lives: Siegen, Germany

Over eight years ago a group of 9 from Siegen, Germany came to Belize for a mission trip which started as a result of a brief encounter with Janos Hench when he was visiting CC Saving Grace. Who would have ever imagined that would have been the beginning of connections that would have lasted all of these years with very precious and special relationships. Actually, out of the 9 who originally went to Belize on that mission trip, six of them have returned to Belize and some several times. Simon Friedrich was one who served a year with me at Lighthouse Christian Radio and prior to that Janos Hench helped me with my recovery after surgery. Interestingly enough, the purpose of my visit was to see Janos & Anja’s newly born daughter Glorie. Janos has become like a son to me from that first time meeting and my last visit to Germany was for his wedding 21 months ago.

Simon Friedrich teaching at Sunday Morning Youth Service at CC Siegen!

I was blessed to see Simon Friedrich and met his wife Michelle for the very first time. In the short visit I was fortunate to see all of the folks that I’ve developed special relationships with and to see what God has done in their lives over the years. Each engaged in ministry and most with their young families and continuing to touch lives for Christ. So many highlights, to name a few; holding Glorie, my German granddaughter; seeing Simon as a married man and a Youth Leader teaching the Word; Jesai & Rebecca with their 2 precious kids (I performed their wedding in Germany 6 years ago). And so many treasured memories and good times with many precious people! I am so grateful to the Lord for all of the people He has brought into my life from all over the world and the vital part they have in my life and ministry in Belize!

Lives touching lives: San Pedro Town, Belize

Meanwhile back in Belize, Geovanni Reyes returned from the 10 days Bible Boot Camp at Machaca Outreach Center, Punta Gorda and was greatly blessed. He is the young man that recently gave his life to the Lord last month. We are looking at the possibility of having him come onboard at Lighthouse for a period of time to be discipled. Edler and I have been praying about this and it would be an opportunity for both of them as he would be the one who will be doing the 24/7 discipling. This has been a great desire of mine to have such a program as I believe that one on one lifestyle/discipleship is necessary for spiritual growth for both the one discipling and the one being discipled. We would like to start a Disciple Internship Program which would not only allow him the opportunity to build a good Biblical foundation but to prepare him for starting University of Belize in January with structure, discipline, and developing good study habits. We are in need of sponsorship for Geo as he will be living in the Staff Apartment and working part time at the radio station. Please contact me if you are interested in being a part of touching this young man’s life in a significant way! Also, please pray for us as we embark on this venture to impact and touch a life for Christ which is true discipleship!

Tabi Evans, the British young lady mentioned briefly earlier, wrote me asking if there was any opportunities available for her to assist us in ministry for 3 months. Marla’s House of Hope came to mind as I know several members of the Board of Directors who oversee that ministry and know firsthand the work they’re doing as we’ve had mission teams in the past serve at the Home in various capacities. Marla’s House of Hope is located in the capital city of Belmopan, a home for children who has suffered sexual abuse in some form or another. Please pray for Tabi as she will be she help with developing a program for preschool age, tutoring those in primary and secondary schools and working with the older girls in ‘life’s skills’ and mentoring!

Upcoming Events & Schedule:

Thankful for a very restful, refreshing and reconnecting vacation!

Please pray for God’s blessings upon my niece Nicole wedding ceremony.

The entire month of July was nonstop with three mission teams and two summer interns conducting a total of 6 VBS (Vacation Bible School), two Sports Camps, Fun Nights and Movie Nights in Central Park. It was one of my busiest months and yet one of my most favorite to see lives touched and changed forever!

Calvary Chapel West Grove, California

A team of 32 people from the High School ministry of Calvary Chapel West Grove arrived on the mainland of Belize at the start of July and immediately got busy conducting a three day VBS for the Calvary Chapel Los Tambos, an outreach ministry of Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship. This was Pastor Erick’s first VBS since the birth of the church in Los Tambos Village and he was delighted to see the children participated and learning more about Jesus.

West Grove team with kids from Los Tombas at VBS

This was the second time that CC West Grove brought their young people to minister in Belize. This time a week was spent on the mainland working alongside of Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship before heading over to San Pedro Town to do a week of Sports Camp. They also did a VBS for the children of Amazing Grace who invited their friends, relatives and neighbors. This was also a first for the children of AGCF to have their very own VBS and was a great opportunity to reach out to the German kids in Spanish Lookout.

Lives touching lives

Nathan, Clive, Geovanni and Brennen at Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship.

Geovanni, a young man that I met several years ago in San Pedro Town, and shared the gospel with him numerous times joined me along with my summer interns, Nathan & Brennen, in facilitating the West Grove team on the mainland. I really felt that the Lord was going to do a life changing work in Geovanni as he observed the high school team serving the Lord and living out their Christianity. God truly worked in his life as the seed that was sown in his heart took root and he surrendered his life to Christ during a conversation with Pastor Eric Nelson, youth pastor of CC West Grove. It thrilled me so much after sharing with him off and on over a period of time to see him transformed. I love the way the Lord works; some plant, some water but it is the Lord who gives the increase.

Sports Camp 2011The CC West Grove team of 32 with me, Brennen, Nathan and Geo along with my 2 young Taiwanese friends invaded San Pedro Town for a week of Sports Camp. The first week’s sport was softball which was done in the mornings and the evenings were spent in Central Park where the team engaged in various activities with the kids and many sweet relationship was renewed and new ones where formed. Again, I was so blessed to see the team love on these kids and truly was the hands and feet of Jesus. For our Movie Night in the Park, we showed the movie, “To Save a Life” and many came out for it as well as many tourists who stopped and watched. Our Lighthouse Party in the Park was a blessing as we gave away many school supplies, gifts and balls to the kids that West Grove brought down in assisting us celebrate Lighthouse Christian Radio’s seventh anniversary of broadcasting!

Calvary Abluquerque team 2011

As one team departed from the island the next two arrived! The team of 10 adults from Calvary of Albuquerque and a group of 6 from BIOLA University arrived the following day for the second week of Sports Camp. We introduced Ultimate Frisbee to the kids a year ago so we thought it would be fitting to follow up with it again which the kids enjoyed but their most favorite sports is soccer (football) so it wasn’t long before we resumed football. An unexpected happened as our sports camp was challenged by another sports camp on the island for a champion match on the last day. Our guys were excited and so we had to figure out a way to get all of the kids and team to the Ambergris Stadium which was 5 miles away.

Truck load of kids heading to Ambergris Stadium for football tournament.

The Lord provided the delivery truck from Castillo’s Hardware which was a sight to behold as we rode through the streets on San Pedro Town with a truck load of kids, something that can only take place in Belize. Face painting, balloons, games and the movie, “Letters to God” took place in the evenings in Central Park and kids came out in droves and enjoyed the time with team members. Lives touching lives and making an impact for Christ is what took place as so many kids responded to God’s love and amazing bond and friendships were formed. Please pray for wisdom as we seek to follow up in the upcoming months!

Mikaela Fung was a part of last year’s sports camp and upon returning back to Biola University she had a desire to get her University involved in the work that Lighthouse Christian Radio was doing with the summer sports camps. It wasn’t long before she contacted me to let me know that the Student Mission Union was planning a trip to Belize to assist us with Sport Camps and ministry. A team of 3 young men and 3 young ladies arrived in Belize for a 3 weeks trip. After their first week of sports camp in San Pedro Town, the 6 students along with Brennen and Nathan traveled to the mainland to conduct a VBS for Calvary Chapel Cayo, Santa Elena Town where they assisted Pastor Patrick in reaching the kids in the new community where they will be relocating their church. This was a first for them to have a VBS and the response was very good. This week, they are doing another VBS for Selena Village, a village where Pastor Erick from Los Tombas have been reaching out to. These students are receiving more than they are giving out as they have had the opportunity see many of Belize’s cultures from the island life to now staying in the Mennonite Community and reaching out to Spanish villages.

I’m so grateful to the Lord for the work that each team has done here in Belize. It is a lot of work facilitating mission teams but the joy I get from it is the fact that each person on each team is contributing to touching lives and making a greater impact for Christ than I could ever do as one person. May God bless and reward each one for the investment they have made and are making for the Kingdom of God here in Belize. Thank you very much!

Various News, info and prayer request:

Geovanni is attending the Bible Boot Camp being held at Machaca Outreach Center in Punta Gorda for 10 days. Please pray for him as he will be returning home to San Pedro Town where he lives and will be faced with many challenges. We have offered him the opportunity to stay with us at the Lighthouse in the staff apartment with Edler for a time of discipleship before attending the University of Belize in January. He has become like a son to me and would really appreciate your prayers as I seek to see him established in the faith and prepared for a successful spiritual future and in turn reach many young people for Christ. It is very difficult of a young person living on the island to succeed spiritually and again the need for a healthy, relevant and Bible Teaching church to be established in San Pedro Town. With God all things are possible!

Brennen and Nathan, summer of service interns, did a great job in assisting me with the teams this year as well as the various impacts that they made in the lives of many kids; various team members, Edler and especially Geovanni. Please pray that the lessons learned and experienced had would enable them to continue a life of serve to the Lord as they return to the US and back to University.

Edler Blas continues to serve in various capacities in the operation of the radio station. Please pray for him as he oversees the ministry in my absence. Also pray for his Tuesday evening Spanish Bible Study at Lighthouse.

Tabi Evans, a young lady from Bath, England will be coming to Belize in September to assist in various ministries, chiefly Marla’s House of Hope, a home for abused children. Please pray for a smooth transition culturally and effectiveness in assisting the Home especially with the girls.

Please pray for me as I’ll be taking some time off to rest, retreat, revive and receive fresh vision. Also for my monthly support which seems to drop drastically this time of the year.

We are entering into the peak Hurricane season, August – November, please pray for God’s mercy upon us as it is projected to be a very active season. Also for the right timing and for replacing the tower’s guide-wires!

“God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:9

I’ve found it so easy for me to stay busy with all of the daily demands of ministry weather it’s the radio ministry and its daily surprises or individuals that I’m witnessing to, discipling, mentor/counseling, etc. and often I forget the first and most important ministry that I’m called into. That is simply the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ! Interestingly enough, our effectiveness will be determined by just that because I can only give out what has been poured into me through my fellowship with Him. We so often wonder why so many of our fellowship warriors are wore out or burnt out and the sure step in that direction starts with forgetting our first and most important calling, to minister to and maintain our intimacy and fellowship with Jesus. Would you please me in prayer that I will always keep worship before the work and fulfill my high calling!

San Pedro Town: One Body

Clive Welsh with several pastors after the Pastors Meeting

In light of the upcoming lawsuit of the government of Belize by a homosexual activist group, several pastors and leaders have joined together to form the ‘Belize Action: Raising Awareness, Standing for what’s right, Taking Action’. They have traveled to the various districts of Belize to inform the pastors of what is taking place; the suing of our government in order to remove ‘sodomy’ and ‘unlawful acts’ from the law to usher in the homosexual agenda, and our response as Christians. The court case is scheduled for middle of October. It came to my attention that none of the pastors in San Pedro Town was aware of what was going on so I gathered them together to inform, pray and discuss what action we should take as the church on the island. Five pastors met and this was the first time a meeting of this kind took place to my knowledge. We prayed together and discussed the issue at hand and I was so moved in heart to hear the hearts of these pastors as they prayed for the needs of the island. Also, a unanimous desire was expressed for the pastors to come together to make a difference with the multitude of issues facing the Body of Christ in San Pedro Town apart from the homosexual lawsuit issue. So from that meeting we have formed a Pastors Fellowship and I was asked to spearhead it since the Radio Ministry has already served as a catalyst. We’ve met twice and each time it was an incredible blessing as we lifted our voice, hearts and prayers to God for our Town. Please pray that God would continue to bless these pastors and give us untied wisdom, vision, and direction. Also that the churches would make a bold and loving stand for truth and righteousness in San Pedro Town!

Over the years, I’ve had many opportunities to address the student body of San Pedro High school with guest speakers from various ministries. Each time my heart goes out the over 350 students that attend the High School and I’ve prayed for an open door to minister to the students there. In a discussion with the principal, who was broken hearted over the many students dropping out due to pregnancy and lack of parental involvement in their lives a few years back. As I’ve gotten to know several of the students over the recent years and heard first hand of some of the challenges facing students, my desires and prayers have increased and looking for opportunities to serve the student body in the upcoming school year in September. I was invited to the inauguration ceremony of their new building and most recently to this year’s graduation ceremony and again, my heart was stirred at the talents, abilities and potential of young people there and what God can do through one or two students would get turned on to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Please pray for an effectual open door for us as a radio ministry to get the gospel to the students of San Pedro High School in a relevant and life changing way that would make a great impact on the island!

God continues to use the radio ministry and we are encouraged by the responses from listeners during our Special Request Hour! In our last telephone survey of 325 random calls over 200 did not know that know about Lighthouse Christian Radio so we see the need to be intentional in getting the word out through signs, local newspaper, t-shirts, fliers and thinking of creative ways to reach more listeners. We recently received a call from a listener in the Cayo District, the farthest western district beyond the nation’s capital. I was really surprised by this but according to the Galcom engineers we should be heard in a much larger coverage area. We are in the process of figuring out what the problem is and proceed to do what is needed to correct it. Also, we need to replace the guide-wires which have rusted with fiberglass type. Would you prayerfully consider assisting us with the cost of the guide-wires?

Lighthouse Christian Radio will celebrate its seventh year of broadcasting in San Pedro Town on Friday, July 15! We are very grateful for all the Lord has done over the past seven years through the various people that has served alongside of us. It is too numerous to list all who has co-labored with us but God knows each one and we give thanks for all of you! We look forward to new ways to effectively serve His people with solid Bible teaching programs and reaching out to those who need to know Jesus as Lord and Savior.

As a part of our celebration, we will be conducting Sports Camps once again this year with returning teams from Calvary Chapel West Grove High School Ministry, California and folks from Calvary of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We will conduct 2 weeks of sports camp; the first week will be softball and the second will be football (soccer) and Ultimate Frisbee. The first team arrived on Sunday, July 3 and will be conducting Bible Camps for Los Tambos Village and the children of Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship and Spanish Lookout before traveling to the island for the first week of sport camp.

Summer of Service:

Two young men who were apart of last year’s team from CC West Grove are here with me to assist with the teams and ministry. They are Nathan Hoffman and Brennan Lee. Here is brief introduction to these guys, please keep them in prayers as we facilitates the teams coming to serve the children and make an impact with the love of Christ.

I’m Brennan Lee; I’m from Huntington Beach California and currently a sophomore at UC Riverside. Last summer I came to Belize for a two-week mission trip through my church Calvary Chapel West Grove, while I was here I really learned to love the people here and God really put it on my heart to come back and help again. So when Clive Welsh offered me the opportunity to come back for 6 weeks, I was really excited. My prayer requests: I would stay illness free throughout this trip, and that God would work through me to help influence some of the teens that are really looking for the Lord.

My name is Nathan Hoffman; I was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California and I currently attend California State University of Long Beach. Last summer I went to San Pedro on a two-week mission trip where we ran sports camps and vacation bible schools for some of the kids. I was so blessed by the kids and all of the people that we met and when the opportunity to come back again arose I was more than excited to come. Some prayer requests; God to move through me in the lives of other and to reveal more of Himself to me this summer!

Belize & Beyond Mission Update: May 2011

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecc 3:1

The dry season is coming to a close and we welcome the rainy season in a few weeks with great anticipation as it has been a very hot and dry time in Belize! The dry season is typically the time when farmers burns their fields to prepare for the rain but with the heat, fire and smoke, well you can just imagine the situation. This year especially since so many trees where fallen due to Hurricane Richard and became fuel for the fire which caused severe forest fires that went out of control in some areas. Not to mention, the difficulties of breathing especially for those with respiratory or allergies in many districts of the country. A reminder to us in our spiritual seasons as we endure dry season of our soul; painful and costly as it might be during the burning away of the dross and junk, remember that your Heavenly Father is preparing you for the fruitful seasons ahead. He is determined to make us more like Himself and uses those seasons of life to cause us reflect His glory!

The Church Response to Homosexual lawsuit:

In the last Update I shared with you about a homosexual group that is suing the government of Belize in order to remove the ‘sodomy’ and ‘unnatural acts’ from the law so that they can proceed with their agenda which will eventually lead to homosexual marriages. The Belize Council of Churches, Anglican Dioceses of Belize, the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Belize and Belmopan, the Methodist Church and the Belize Association of Evangelical Churches, and the Belize Christian Media Fellowship, have come together as ‘interested parties’ and has hired a team of lawyers to join the Attorney General of Belize against this lawsuit which will go to the Supreme Court in July. We realize that all of the Caribbean countries will be looking closely at this case and it will set precedence whatever the outcome will be. The Belize Constitution proclaims the supremacy of God and this challenge to change the constitution is the start to slowly remove God from the place He has in this country as we see it happening in the US and other countries. Please pray of this young country with all of its challenges; increase crime and violence, corruption, poverty, increase immorality and its affect on the younger generation as well as HIV/AIDS. I’m constantly reminded of the verse, “where sin abound, grace abound much more”. Please pray for the church as it is uniting together to stand for righteousness and for God to use this to draw many to salvation and deliverance that is found only in Jesus Christ!

Around San Pedro Town:

Discipleship on the street corner of San Pedro Town.

The more I’m available to the Lord in San Pedro Town, the more opportunities I get to minister to many on the island through relationships that have been built over time or new developing ones. Relationship is so key, people you see on regular bases over a long period of time and over brief chat or sharing smile or humor bad or good, a bridge is built. You might not even know their name nor do they know yours but something is there and perhaps they have a name for you that you might not ever find out or know. Many know me as ‘Mr. Lighthouse’ or ‘Big Man’. I find that so many people are open to the simple gospel especially when they see you living it out daily. I can walk the streets of San Pedro all day and spend time talking to residents or visitors and sharing God’s love with many. Again it has been drawn to my attention the horrible plight that many young people face on the island. My heart breaks as I listen to the stories of pain, rejection, neglect, abuse, helplessness and hopelessness. What is even more painful is pouring out your heart over and over again seeing the gospel heard but not heeded time and time again knowing that Jesus is truly the answer. In those times I am reminded of the reason why I’m here and doing exactly what I’m doing. “How will they hear without a preacher?” The rest of that scripture also ask the question, “How can they go unless they are sent.” Thank you for being a part of it also by being a sender!

Feeding the hungry:

It is a daily privilege to be a part of passing on a blessing to those who might otherwise go without bread. We continue to receive the left over bread from The Baker each evening and then we sort and divided them for several pastors and families who come to receive them daily. We see this as a stewardship by the Lord through The Baker and when it is viewed like that it makes it a ministry rather than just giving away free bread. We pray daily that just the right person and family will receive it and as a result God’s love will be shared in very practical and tangible way. I’m reminded of Our Lord being called ‘the Light of the world’ as well as ‘the Bread of Life,’ two very practical ways we get to serve Him at Lighthouse Christian Radio and through what we call The Bread Run. What an honor to serve in these capacities!

Shining the Light in the Darkness:

In a recent survey of the residences of Ambergris Caye, we were surprised at the demographics of listeners to Lighthouse Christian Radio. The majority of listeners is women, Catholics and has Spanish as their first language. Those surveyed enjoyed both the teaching programs and the variety of Christian music. Another astonishing fact was the large amount of people who have not heard of us nor knew that we are here on the island. We used the opportunity to inform them about our radio ministry and many were glad to hear that we are here on the island. Interestingly enough, we received a call from happy listener on the mainland about 30 miles away, who receives a very clear signal of Lighthouse Christian Radio. Another surprise was from a caller from over 70 miles away. We are currently discussing the adjustment of our antennas and replacing the guide-wires with our friends at Galcom International. They are looking into guide-wires made from stronger materials that will not easily rust due to the salt air along with seeing what can be done to reach more of Belize City. Presently, we have no idea how far our signal reaches and as mentioned earlier, we are reaching further than we had imagined but have no way of knowing specifically.

We continue receiving reports from those walking by our studio during the hours of 3 PM – 4 PM, our special request hour, as we broadcast the radio station on PA system from our balcony. It is a rare thing to hear Christian Music on the streets of San Pedro Town so we talk advantage of this time to fill the air and airwaves with the sounds of worship and praise to the Lord. It is not uncommon to hear multiple sound systems blaring secular, sometimes very inappropriate and vulgar music from the nearby bars or households, so it is refreshing to hear uplifting Christian music of faith, hope and love. Another upcoming opportunity will be our Movie Nights in the Park. Recently a Bible Study group from Colorado donated a projector to us for that very purpose. We will use the nearby Central Park to show Christian Movies during the summer nights and provide wholesome entertainment and ministry to all ages free of charge. We are so grateful to Jon Paul & Sara’s home bible study group for being an answer to prayers for over 2 years now. Please pray for this awesome opportunity to present the gospel through DVDs and movies. Also, if you would like to donate quality and meaningful DVDs for this outreach, please contact me for mailing details!

Edler Blas took a well deserved vacation and visited his family in Nicaragua and in his absence Elmer Montero and I took up the slack with the daily operations of the radio station. The need became apparent once again for a ministry team to be developed as there are so many things I’d like to see done along with the daily operations of the radio station. It has been our prayers for several years now for such a team to develop and would appreciate your continual prayer with us for this. I’ll be share more with you on this in upcoming Updates! Please pray for renewed vision for Elder as he returns back to Belize in a few days!

“Grace to you and peace from God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age…..to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen” Galatians 1:3-5

Sitting down to write this update a few days after Easter and reflecting on the powerful reminder of God’s great love to us as demonstrated on the Cross and the Empty tomb and thinking about His purpose; penalty for our sins and deliverance from this present evil age. As I walked the streets of San Pedro Town after speaking with a banker friend and sharing the observed plight of so many young people on this small island and the increase of evil practices. I could scarcely hold back the tears as I walked the streets and looked into the eyes of people, God reminded me why I was here, not to operate a radio station with all of its challenges and ever changing issues but my purpose is to let as many as possible know that they can be forgiven, delivered and know God in a personal way! It is a painful privilege to ask God to give us His heart for the lost, least, last and little because that is a prayer that He delights to answer and changes us in the process!

Now for a brief update on the past month, the annual YC (Youth Conference) took place the beginning of April. This is one of the largest youth events of the year in Belize and was larger than previous YC. Many young people made profession of faith as the gospel was presented by both local and foreign speakers and musicians. Dennis Requena, the young man who worked at Lighthouse Christian Radio from its inception, played many songs from his recently released CD at the Friday night concert. He was great and performed before a very energetic crowd of young people. Dennis is now teaching at a Primary School in Roaring Creek Village and is continuing his education in the evenings at the University of Belize. It is a blessing to see him making a difference with his music and his example to many young people in his home village and now nationally through his music. I’m so grateful to have had a very small part in his life and greatly blessed to see how God is using him. Please continue to pray for him that he would continue to shine his light brightly to his students and the young people of Belize.

Belize Christian Media Fellowship

After many years of praying and sharing similar visions and ideas with several other likeminded media friends, the Belize Christian Media Fellowship has been established and a Board of Directors was recently appointed and ratified at our last meeting. Each meeting starts out with a time of worship, prayer and timely message of encouragement from the Word of God before the general meeting takes place. We were hosted by the newly appointed Vice Chairman, Jim Duncan of Destiny Radio who provided a great lunch at their facility and it was a great time of getting to know each other better and developing relationship and fellowship. The topics of concern and discussion were intense as they are issues facing Belize as a Nation and we all unanimously felt God has brought us together as Christian Communicators for such a time as this. One topic of importance to us is a homosexual group who are suing the government of Belize in order to remove two laws from the books; sodomy and unlawful acts, so they can proceed in seeking equal rights and legalizing homosexuality. We felt that it was up to us to inform pastors, church leaders and the Christian Community of this radical agenda that was coming up in the Supreme Court in June. Well, to our shock and surprise we found out that the court date was pushed ahead and unknown to us was scheduled a few days prior to Easter. Through various series of ‘divine appointments’ a pastor was alerted to the sudden changes and was able to get a lawyer at the last minute and the court date was rescheduled for July. Needless to say, it has been a very intense week of spiritual warfare as each person involved could sense attacks in ways that only showed us that truly our battle is not against flesh and blood. Please pray for us as we proceed in giving a clear, loving and Biblical voice to this issue and that the Body of Christ would be informed, awakened, and become united in this very challenging time. Issues of abortion, which is still illegal in Belize but not enforced, as a recent UN report stated that over 3,000 abortions per annum in Belize. And now with the same sex marriages and other major attacks on Christian and family values are at stake in this small and very precious country. Please pray for all that is needed for the upcoming court case; wisdom, informing and gather the Pastors, Christian Leaders, and the Body of Christ together; the right legal team, finances, and most of all that God would use this opportunity to further the gospel of Jesus Christ in Belize!

A Nation in Crisis

The alarming crime rate and violence was another topic as Belize now has the highest murder rate in the history of the nation with 40 murders since the start of the year! According to statistics, we are now rated number 9 most violent country in the world, per capa. Interestingly, I heard a news report today which also says that Belize is one of the top 10 places to live because of its beautiful beaches, people, climate, etc. A beautiful place indeed with a lot of important issues at hand that has the potential of crumble the very foundation and fiber of our young country; HIV/AIDS, gang violence, an increase of suicide among youth involved in a cult, removing corporal punishment from the schools which is viewed as a major contributor of crime, and many other issues. Please pray for God to do a work to turn the tide on the destructive things that the enemy is stirring up at the moment by sending an outpouring of His Spirit on our country!

Still Shining the Light in the Darkness

Shortly after my last Update, Emil, our newest staff member left suddenly due to consequences from bad choices he made. It was an unfortunate move and we are still reeling from his departure as he had become a special part of the team and most importantly a new believer. I was reminded recently that being involved in discipling/mentoring and pouring into others is costly with great investment of heart, time, resources, emotions and energy; but that is what we are called to do in making disciples. Please pray for Emil that he would continue to seek the Lord and allow Him to restore, recycle and use his situation to deepen him in his relationship and commitment to Christ!

Over the years, many friends and visitors have come to Lighthouse for various reasons, some for a time to be refreshed, renewed, vacation or to assist in the ministry. We were fortunate to host several in our Lighthouse Guest Apartment and Staff Apartment over the past few months. Simon and Karolina from Australia spent nine nights with us as a part of their 2nd anniversary celebration with their toddler Freddie. A few days after they left, Frank and Kathy from Michigan arrived for a month’s stay for a vision tour to see if God is leading them to full time mission on the island. Over the Easter weekend, we hosted Henry & Martha and their 2 boys for a short vacation; all of them stayed in our Guest Apartment which is a clean, fully furnished, one bedroom at a very reasonable cost which pays the monthly rent for the apartment. Meanwhile in the Staff Apartment, Edler has hosted, Nate from New Mexico who volunteered for several weeks at the ministry before moving to Belmopan to assist with another ministry. He was followed by Tom and Adam, short-term missionaries from Idaho, who stayed a few days to enjoy the island before heading back home after 3 month of service on the mainland of Belize. Next we had my Mayan friend, Florencio who had never been to the island before, came for portion of his Easter break and during that same time, Ruel came for a few nights stay. Now Richard, a missionary from the southern district of Punta Gorda is with us for a few day get-a-way and rest. It’s a blessing to provide accommodations for visitors and friends and to see how the Lighthouse has become a place of refuge for many.

mainland for a Sunday morning but whenever I am, it is delight to attend and be a part of the Body of believers at Amazing Grace Christian Fellowship. God continues to bless the fellowship as Rudy faithfully teaches the Word on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. Recently, a joint service was held with the brethren from the church in Los Tambos followed by a BBQ for a fellowship meal. I think of the song “Little Country Church” by Love Song, one of the very first Christian Band formed in the late 1960, which talks of the variety of people who came together to praise the Lord whenever I’m worshipping with the folks at Amazing Grace.

Horizon Radio have been broadcasting now for 5 months and recently upgraded to a 1000 watt transmitter where their reach is now extended to 4 of the 6 districts in Belize. Johnny Wall, former volunteer/missionary at Lighthouse has been working full time running the operations of Horizon Radio since December and doing a very good job. God continues to bless the radio station beyond the borders of Belize through streaming which can be heard worldwide. Who would have ever thought of such a thing? Please continue to pray God’s blessing upon the radio ministry and that many more people would be edified, encouraged and equipped through the various Bible teaching programs and music!
