Ashman February 2010 Missions Update-Holly Day’s in San Diego
Porn Nation…We can no longer NOT talk about it!

It is sad to say but it is no longer a surprise to read that many students are addicted to pornography, and we’re not just talking about the non-believers. As I begin to read summer mission trip applications, it is sad to hear even students raised in Christian homes, involved in our ministry and even sometimes our student leaders are entrapped by this growing sexual addiction and sin.

Michael Leahy, a believer who is an author, speaker and recovering sex-addict has created a program he uses on college campuses to help students grasp how really destructive porn is. He shares his story of how this affected his children and marriage and the long journey to restoration from this addiction. The seminar encouraged the students to think about how exposure to porn and our hyper sexual culture is affecting them and their relationships. Michael concludes with a clear presentation of the gospel and how students can set themselves up for success in relationships with Jesus.

The team at UC San Diego put on this outreach after posting fliers for a week and a half in the rain. Just in promoting the event, they had many spiritual conversations with students even before the event took place. But where there are good spiritual conversations there are also great challenges. The administration did not want this Christian event to happen and so there wasn’t a room reservation confirmed until the actual day of the event! And of course there were protesters from the “Pornography Club” on campus called “Koloa” stating that porn equals free speech! (Did you even know there was such a club on college campuses?) This club distributes it own porn newspaper on campus freely, and last month’s issue had on the front page an article titled “How to get away with Rape.” The crazy thing is that it was written by women who are part of this club. The week of the event the staff team put up discussion boards to see what the students thought about pornography. Over half of the responses were from women and about half of the women were promoting porn! Unfortunately, this is how depraved the college campus has become and how this topic is in the face of every college student today.
At UCSD there were 135 in attendance, and the next night at SDSU there were about 250 students in attendance. Michael shared his testimony and how pornography destroyed his marriage and his family. He then went into a clear presentation of the gospel and how the power of the gospel is what helped him overcome, recover, heal and transform his life. At UCSD one women indicated a decision to follow Jesus and about 30 asked for Michael’s book to help them learn more about how the gospel transformed his life. SDSU saw 14 students indicate that they want to surrender their lives to Jesus. The staff are still trying to do follow up with students who wanted to meet with them after these two events.
Please pray for the Lord to convict this generation of the destructiveness of this sin and that He would heal those who are wanting freedom from it. This world is a very dark place in need of Jesus. Please pray we are able to shine His light brightly in the midst of all of this darkness. If we don’t talk about these things, no one will. Please pray for us as we continue to reach the next generation with the power of the gospel. Thank you so much for your prayers and support. I am eternally thankful.
