The past 20 years the Country of Uganda, as well as, Southern Sudan has seen terror in a new light. A terrorist group called the “Lord’s Resistance Army” or LRA, has been brutally murdering men, women and children in the most horrific and satanic ways. With no clear political platform, no constituency, and no beneficial purpose in view, this group travels around northern Uganda freely raping, molesting and killing all who cross their paths. Sadly, this terrorist group consists mostly of kidnapped children – forced to kill and trained to be bloodthirsty murderers. The older solders will attach a home or village and use the male children to do all the killing. They will kill all the adults, rape and kill all the women; this is the start of their training in the LRA. The male children will be forced to kill their parents, siblings and relatives and then will be forced to eat their flesh or do other horrifying actions. The young girls, if they survive, will be used as sex slaves until they serve no more purpose and then will be brutally murdered. It is estimated that the LRA has abducted well over 44,000 children into service.

With this fear lingering over the children’s head it has compelled thousands in the districts of Gulu and Kitgum to walk several miles every night from their homes in countryside village areas to safer locations in the larger cities nearby. They look for sidewalks, bus stations and shelters to sleep on the ground or concrete floors - every night - and often with no blankets or bedding. These children are collectively known as the "Night Commuters" or "night walkers".

These children choose to make this journey dusk and dawn every day because the LRA prefers to attack small isolated villages at night, instead of mounting complex urban assaults. These “Night Commuters” spend the night huddled together in bus stops, under patios, and in doorways; in any open flat space with the slightest amount of shelter.  Without a mattress to sleep on, or a shower to bathe in, the children then rise in the morning and walk back to their villages where they attend school and work on their family farms.
