Guinea is a small country located on the West coast of Africa and is about the size of Oregon. It has a tropical climate with fairly consistent temperatures year-round and high levels of humidity.
Guinea is predominantly a Muslim country with about 85% of the population adhering to Islam. The country is composed of approximately ten million people and about forty different ethnic groups. The three largest groups are the Malinké (Mandingo), the Fula (Fulani), and the Susu.
The presence of Calvary Chapel in Guinea, West Africa began in the summer of 2007. While there are other missionaries and organizations operating in Guinea, it is still largely unreached. Although it is a predominantly Muslim country, there are many who are open to the gospel and in some areas there have even been letters written requesting someone to build a church there. Indeed there harvest is plentiful but there are few workers.
The present work in Guinea is focused on the Susu people who are found mostly in the coastal region of Guinea. They are the third largest people group in Guinea with about 2 million people and of those about 99 percent of them are Muslim. At this time they have only portions of the Bible translated into their language.
Our desire is to share the love of God through our words and actions. We hope to see more people come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, using whatever means the Holy Spirit leads us to. As believers are taught and discipled, we look forward to seeing churches develop which are led and maintained by the nationals in the area.
From a spiritual standpoint, the people here lack hope and are ripe to receive the hope of eternal life. They are considered one of the richest countries in West Africa, yet they are oppressed by a greedy government. Because of this, poverty is a way of life for the majority of them. Due to the lack of understanding God’s love, there is also a lack of love between people. Often there is an appearance of trust and friendship which is later replaced with betrayal and lies. Each person uses their position and authority to gain a higher position by stepping on those below them. They desperately need the government of Jesus Christ to transform their country and more importantly, their lives individually.
